Type & Space

Brief By Esa Matinvesi (University of Arts London, Central St. Martins)

“Choose a personal message and communicate it to your audience using spatial typography”

Personal Description

“Habits change in to character”-Ovid

After reseaching for a personal message, I wanted to use the above quote by Ovid to show how typography can change forms in simple terms. For weeks, i explored how typography can change using repition, pattern, geometric forms and light/shadows. The overlying message was to show how a persons habits can and eventually will change over time and that there is an action that will ultimatly precede this. In order to allow my space to activate this action, I utilized the earths natural rotation and clock. I wanted to use natural light to showcase shadows of letters from pre-existing letterforms. I created 3D typography letterforms from MDF, which from a front angle would show the first portion of the quote. When the sun would shine against the typography, certain letters would emerge with a shadow to show the final word “Character” into the quote. Below are photos from my exploration.

This brief is very much open ended. You can choose a message that has grown out from your on-going research for your FESP modules, or you might want to look into translating a printed text to spatial form, nevertheless choosing the content will be entirely in your decision. You are not obligated to use any specific materials or style, rather to adapt your medium to your content. However there are two limitations to this brief: your final outcome cannot be drawn (or written) on paper, nor displayed on screen. The goal of this brief is to get your hands dirty in making!
